Specialist Care

What is Specialist Care

Specialist care at Cedar Care Homes is designed for individuals with more complex or profound conditions, disabilities, cognitive disorders, or specific diagnoses. Our care teams have the skills, training, experience, and qualifications to provide around-the-clock support, tailored to each resident’s unique needs.

Specialist Care can be categorised as follows

Complex Dementia

Complex Dementia is a term used to describe conditions whereby individuals may have more than one type of dementia, for example Alzheimer’s and Vascular dementias. It can also be used to describe presentation of those with symptoms caused by dementia itself but resembling mental health conditions. Lastly, it may mean that an individual affected by a psychological disturbance also develops dementia which is now a primary issue for them. Regardless of cause for complexity of dementia related needs, affected persons experience high levels of anxiety or distress.

Care and services are focused on optimising emotional wellbeing by providing appropriate social engagement and meaningful activities whilst supporting the individual to maintain appropriate levels of nutrition, hydration and sleep as well as effectively managing continence. Compassionate, constant support and monitoring are required to achieve safety of the individual and/ or others with regular involvement of healthcare professionals to manage risk and wellbeing.

Palliative Care

Palliative Care is a term used to describe the level of support required when a person is diagnosed with a life limiting, terminal illness. The focus of treatment is maintaining quality of life for those affected by illnesses such as comorbidities of dementia, cancer, heart failure, kidney disease among many others. Depending on symptoms, personalised support is provided in activities of daily living, maximising opportunities to live a meaningful life as well as specialised nursing assessment and treatment. Regular involvement of highly specialised healthcare professionals is required.

End of Life Care

End of Life Care is a term often mistaken with palliative care. While being offered palliative care, people can often continue to live a meaningful life. End of life care is a form of palliative care that a person receives when they are close to the end of life. Care and services are focused on ensuring comfort, dignity and addressing physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Specialist nursing assessment and treatment are offered to relieve stress, agitation, pain, swallowing difficulties and any other symptoms affecting comfort. Once a person enters the end of life stage no life saving treatment is offered.
